Departure options include Antigua or Guatemala City. So don’t miss out on this unique adventure!

The Pacaya volcano is one of the 33 volcanoes in Guatemala and one of the most active in Central America.

With a height of 2,552 meters in the landscape, it is located on the volcanic arch of Central America, precisely between the regions of Escuintla and Guatemala.

Since its last eruption in 1965, the volcano has never come to rest completely. Instead, its regular rumble and lava flow give a spectacular display of the mountain’s natural strength.

The active crater of the Pacaya volcano is named after the Guatemalan doctor Alfredo MacKenney, who was the first to climb to its summit to conduct research.

Itinerary

This private tour starts with a morning transfer to the foothills of the active Pacaya volcano.

The hike begins with a moderately strenuous hike through a beautiful pine forest, then through a more tricky volcanic ash section, and finally to the sulfur smoking cone.

On occasions, you can even see small eruptions and lava flow depending on the volcano’s activity.

We can enjoy great views of the northern volcanoes, Pacific lowlands, and El Salvador from the summit.

Back at the volcano’s base, our support vehicle awaits us for our return to Antigua.

This tour can be organized during the morning or afternoon; during the sunset, the darkness offers the opportunity for a better lava observation.
